Makesense Designs
A Human-Centred, Architectural & Interior Design Practice, From North East Himalayas run by Principal Architect Bharath.
Firm Philosophy
The name makesense reflects our responsible approach to respecting a site and logically addressing the necessities of each client, while also bringing out a unique concept in every project. At a deeper level, makesense is about creating sensorial experiences — designing spaces that can be felt as much as they are seen. For us, architecture and interiors are not separate disciplines but rather coherent reflections of one another, seamlessly interwoven to form meaningful environments.
Through design that engages all five senses, we strive to create spaces rooted in the beauty of their natural setting and enriched by the culture of the people they serve. Whether through homes that embrace shifting mountain light, or interiors that echo the textures of local craft, every project aspires to nurture a harmonious relationship between people and place in the fragile yet powerful landscapes of the Himalayas.
Ar.Bharath
Principal Architect & Founder
Ar.Bharath leads a passionate team dedicated to creating architecture that is contextually grounded, conceptually strong, and experientially rich. Under his guidance, the team approaches every project—whether a compact 300 sq. ft. interior or a sprawling 1.5-acre masterplan—with a thoughtful balance of client needs, site understanding, and cultural context. Bharath emphasizes the importance of materiality, construction techniques, and sensorial experiences, ensuring that spaces are not only functional and logical but also engaging to all five senses. His leadership inspires the team to design spaces that are timeless, human-centered, and deeply connected to the natural and cultural environment of the Himalayas.
A graduate of NIT Tiruchirappalli (2010–2016), Bharath combines technical rigor with a profound commitment to "sensorial environments." His philosophy, reflected in the firm's name, emphasizes creating spaces that are contextually grounded, sustainable, and capable of engaging all five senses. Before establishing his own practice, he served as a Senior Architect in Gangtok (2016–2020), where he contributed to landmark projects like the Taj Vivanta Pakyong and honed his expertise in documentation and BIM workflows.
His practice is deeply informed by his academic engagement as a Visiting Faculty at CEPT University (2020–2022). Co-tutoring courses on contextual interior space-making, he explored how local traditions and high-altitude lifestyles shape spatial experiences. This period of teaching reinforced his belief in empathetic design that harmonizes human needs with nature.
The firm's identity was forged through a transformative journey. Originally registered in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in 2016, the practice found its true home during the COVID-19 pandemic when a freelance opportunity brought Bharath to the mountains of Sikkim. Grounded in this serene landscape, he balanced design with teaching, allowing his philosophy to crystallize. In 2022, he established the firm's studio in Pangthang, Sikkim transforming an old apartment into a live-work space that frames a breathtaking view of Mt. Kanchenjunga, serving as a daily reminder of the landscape that inspires his work.
Ar.Dhara Hirapara
Senior Architect & Sourcing Head
Dhara is a Senior Architect at Makesense Designs, based between Mumbai and Surat working closely across design development, detailing, and on-ground execution. She plays a role in translating conceptual intent into buildable, well-resolved architecture through detailed drawings, material research, and coordination. Her work involves extensive engagement with contractors, craftsmen, and vendors, sourcing materials from regions of the plains such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, while adapting them sensitively to site conditions. From developing samples and mock-ups to explaining design intent to on-site teams, she bridges design and execution with precision and clarity.
Architecture, for me, is not a finished philosophy it is a continuous process of learning, refining, and becoming more attentive with
every project.
While contemporary influences and references inform the journey, the final design remains anchored to context, material honesty, and the realities of place. By staying true to the core concept of a project and responding thoughtfully to nature, craft, and construction, I aim to create spaces that feel relevant today and grounded in their environment for years to come.
