LEPCHA ABODE

Harmonious with nature is the way of life for the Indigenous Lepcha Tribes of Sikkim. Absorbing this philosophy to create a modern Lepcha home with connection to nature, learning from past and subtle statements of identity.

Connection with nature

A beautiful site close to a stream and facing an evergreen forest the design was curated in such a way to connect with these natural elements through all senses. From the sounds of birds to the feel of chaotic change in weather everything is accessible & controllable to live peacefully in this harmonious design. Winter sun and natural ventilation are key aspects of design to the high moisture cold climate of Sikkim. A beautiful large tree that attracts birds and insects was retained as a form of respect to the site. This tree when the design evolved became the most beautiful living element of the entire design.

Learning from Ancestors

Studying traditional Lepcha Houses of Sikkim certain key aspects are followed as a result of various issues in building in the mountains. From raised platforms with stone columns to solid wooden logs staircase the traditional Lepcha home is directly mountain responsive architecture. Understanding these strategies and interpreting them in a modern way further improves the overall quality of mountain life.

Rooted Identity

A unique identity of the Lepcha’s is their traditional wear (Thokro-Dum) and its tribal patterns. These interesting nettle leaf woven fabric as well as abstract form of the tribal patterns are used throughout the design to bring out the tribal identity in a subtle yet modern way. Each symbol has specific meaning so when interpreting we used the appropriate symbol in appropriate spaces to give deeper meaning. The meaning of the patterns are shown below from initial research.
