SIMALA RIVER SHRINE

Located along the tranquil banks of the Rangeet River near Jorethang, Sikkim, the Simala Resort Extension is a hospitality project that reimagines the connection between architecture and nature. Designed by the firm Makesense Designs, this 14,000 sq. ft. expansion adds a contemporary layer to the property formerly known as Baiguney Club Mahindra.

The project is conceptually anchored as a "River Shrine". Unlike traditional shrines that elevate one away from the world, this design operates as a "reverse shrine," intending to draw guests inward to experience a deeper closeness with the earth. The structure is designed to follow the natural contours of the land, stepping gently down the slope to ensure that the architecture flows with, rather than competes against, the surrounding wilderness.

Completed in 2025, the extension comprises 22 river-facing units, divided into 8 suites and 14 standard rooms. Every room is oriented to capture the morning mist and offer expansive views of the river and the adjacent whispering forest. The interiors reflect this dialogue with nature through a palette of warm woods, woven cane screens, and earthy hues, creating an atmosphere of tactile calm. Light is manipulated through patterned partitions to mimic the dappled sunlight found on the river’s surface.

Ultimately, the Simala Retreat Extension serves as a meditative pause, where the sounds of chirping birds and the river’s hum define the guest experience, offering a sanctuary for rhythm, reflection, and renewal.
